2 Days in Agra: A Relaxed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Taj Mahal & Agra Fort
Be at the Taj Mahal gate for opening time, which is 30 minutes before sunrise (around 5:45 AM in October and 6:30 AM in December). The first hour has the softest light on the marble and the fewest people. Allow two to three hours, including time inside the mausoleum. Check the Taj Mahal timings by month and the current ticket prices before you go.
After breakfast, Agra Fort is about 15 minutes away by car. The red sandstone fort was the Mughal court before Delhi, and from the Musamman Burj you can see the Taj Mahal along the river, which is where Shah Jahan is said to have spent his last years. Two hours is a comfortable visit.
Take the hottest part of the afternoon off, then cross the Yamuna to Mehtab Bagh for sunset. The garden lines up with the Taj from the opposite bank, so you see the marble change colour without the crowds.
Day 2: Choose Your Focus
Option A: Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri, Emperor Akbar's red sandstone capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 40 km west of Agra. Go early, spend two to three hours in the palace complex and the Jama Masjid with its Buland Darwaza gateway, and you are back in Agra for lunch. Option B: Baby Taj, Old City and Bazaars
For a gentler day, start at Itimad-ud-Daulah, the marble tomb often called the Baby Taj, whose inlay work came before the Taj Mahal's. Spend the rest of the day in the old city around the Jama Masjid and Kinari Bazaar, where you'll find spice and sweet shops, wedding markets and small temples. If One of Your Days Is a Friday
The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, but Agra Fort, the Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri stay open. If you arrive on Thursday, see the Taj at sunrise that day or on Saturday, and use Friday for Fatehpur Sikri in the morning and Mehtab Bagh at sunset. If Friday is your first day, swap the two days around.
Getting Around Agra
Agra's main sights are within 20–30 minutes of each other by car, so a private car with a driver makes the day easy, especially with a sunrise start. Auto-rickshaws work well for short hops in the city. Most visitors arrive from Delhi by train or on the Yamuna Expressway (about 3 to 4 hours by road). Where to Stay
Staying near the Taj Mahal East Gate area or in central Agra keeps you close to all major sites and cuts down on transit time between them. Pacing Tips
- Two days is enough to see Agra's highlights without rushing. Choose one Day 2 option rather than trying to fit in both.
- From April to June, sightsee early and late and rest in the middle of the day.
- December and January mornings can be foggy. If sunrise is hidden, the late afternoon is often clearer.
- Wear shoes that are easy to take off for the mausoleum and mosques.
