Why Look Beyond the Taj Mahal?
Most visitors give Agra a few hours. That is a pity, because the city was the heart of the Mughal Empire for more than a century, and the Taj Mahal is only one chapter of that story. As an Agra-based team, this is the part of our city we most enjoy showing people: the fort where emperors lived, the tomb that inspired the Taj, and the everyday life of the old bazaars.
Agra Fort
The red sandstone fortress-palace on the Yamuna was the seat of the Mughal emperors before Delhi. Walk through the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), the Diwan-i-Khas and the white marble Musamman Burj, where Shah Jahan is said to have spent his last years looking out at the Taj. Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stays open on Fridays, when the Taj is closed. Allow about 1.5 hours.
Itmad-ud-Daulah (the Baby Taj)
Built in the 1620s by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, this small marble tomb on the east bank of the Yamuna is covered in delicate inlay and lattice work. It is often described as a draft for the Taj Mahal, and it is far quieter, which makes it one of our favourite stops. Allow 45 minutes.
Mehtab Bagh

Fatehpur Sikri
About 40 minutes from Agra, Emperor Akbar's red sandstone capital was abandoned after only 14 years and survives remarkably intact. Highlights are the Buland Darwaza gateway, the white marble Dargah of Sheikh Salim Chishti and the five-storey Panch Mahal. Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra
On the edge of the city, the mausoleum of Emperor Akbar mixes Mughal, Persian and Indian styles in a large garden where deer and peacocks often wander. It is rarely crowded and makes a peaceful stop on the way in from Delhi.
